Florence

Florence
Hostel living was quite fun. Much more civilised than we imagined. Great breakfasts
provided and dinners were so cheap. It was our base for four days while we toured
surrounding Tuscany. We joined a tour and loved the country side, visiting Siena, San
Gimignano and the Chianti wine region.

San Gimingnano, Yuk a house of horrors. So scary, but the views over the Tuscan
countryside made up for it. We clock up many miles so its always good to catch a lift when
I can. Wow the countryside and the girl in the pic is ok also.

San Gimingnano is a town of
towers. It's so amazing how they build the new into the old. Always on the lookout for a
toilet in Europe. Mum thought the Tuscan views were almost as good as her Umbrian
views.

Clever Nells, always taking that artistic shot.

Handicapped but not defeated. Mum
managed always to get to a good view.

The Chianti region was so beautiful. We learnt all
about wine manufacturing and what makes the best Chianti wine. You always get those
people who push to the front.

Our tour included a lunch of local produce and wines to
match.

Siena was our next stop, with a guided tour. We visited piazza Del Campo and learnt all
about the palo horse race which takes place each year. The church is dedicated to Mary,
in fact the whole town is. The hooks that they used to tie the horse and carts up with still
remain for to have a swing on. Very considerate of the town I think. Ah what could be
better than sitting over piazza Dell campo enjoying coffee or ice cream.

The siena horse race... where it does not matter if the jockey does not finish the race... as long as the horse crosses the line first.
how would you like your head imortilised in the boarder of a building? yikes!

Our surprise of the day was to visit on our way home the picturesque village of Rigigimirr.
Again we captured a glorious Tuscan sunset.

We enjoyed learning lots about the Medici families who have left Florence with many
wonderful historical sights for us to enjoy today.
Sometimes I was to exhausted to go out on another walk through markets for bargains so I
opted for bed rest and left the girls to that.
